A Short Guide to The Proper Care of Zeon And Emerald Zoysia

Today many people in Atlanta love to keep their lawns and yards beautiful with different types of grasses. However, they don't have enough time to spend on maintenance, so they usually prefer low-maintenance sods. Among a large number of sods, one of the most popular today is zoysia sod. Zoysia sods are slow-growing and have a wide tolerance to climatic changes that make them ideal to be grown in Atlanta. They grow almost anywhere without any hassle; they need a little maintenance and some care. As this article is on low-maintenance sod grasses, the following are the maintenance guidelines of Zeon and Emerald Zoysia. If you're looking to install Zeon or Emerald Zoysia, consider reaching out to a reliable sod company for assistance and quality products.

Zoysia Sod

Zoysia sod is named after a well-known Slovenian botanist, Karl von Zois. Very few people know that zoysia is a unique type of creeping grass native to Korea and Japan. Besides its native areas, currently, it is found in many parts of Asia and Australia too. It is a very novel type of sod grass renowned for its smooth texture, soft feel, and low growth rate. Its growth pattern is in the form of dense mat-like patches. Hence, it's general use is for covering flat surfaces and halting erosion on hilly slopes. Furthermore, it is a natural weed repellent and can withstand fungal growth.

Different types of Zoysia Sod at Atlanta Sod Farms

At Atlanta Sod Farms, we offer five different varieties of zoysia. Each of them has unique qualities and features that set them apart. These types are:

  1. Zeon Zoysia
  2. Emerald Zoysia
  3. Meyer Zoysia
  4. Empire Zoysia
  5. Jamur Zoysia

Maintenance of Zeon Zoysia Sod

1. Regular Watering Schedule

Zeon Zoysia is a distinguished kind of sod that can adjust well in any soil. The roots of this sod grass penetrate deep into the ground and absorb the moisture to keep itself hydrated and evergreen. However, during a drought, it can turn brown but recovers soon as the rainy season starts. So, this sod requires a regular watering schedule.

2.  Mowing after regular intervals

This sod can be efficiently mowed, with the help of a standard rotatory type machine. Moreover, following a regular mowing schedule, it is recommended to keep a mowing height of 0.5 -2 inches on a regular schedule.

3. Application of Fertilizer

Any fertilizer can be applied to Zeon zoysia sod, following the labeled application instructions on it. However, there is a limitation for the application of nitrogen fertilizers on it that when it reaches a height of 4 inches or is grown in the soil having a temperature of more than 60oF, then they can't be applied.

Emerald Zoysia Grass Maintenance

1. Optimum Irrigation

When properly maintained, emerald zoysia is a rare sod that can handle different climates and irregular watering schedule. Similar to its other family members, the roots of this grass penetrate deep in the soil and absorb moisture and water present there for growth. The optimum watering conditions for this sod are applying 1-inch water every week.

2. Weekly Mowing

Just like Zeon zoysia, this sod grass can be readily mowed by rotatory or reel lawnmower. You must assure that the mower blades are sharp and cut precisely. Maintaining a cutting height of almost 1-1.5 inches is enough for it. This sod can attain a maximum height of 12 inches, and it should be appropriately mowed every 7-10 days.

3. Specialized fertilizer

Unlike Zeon sod, Emerald zoysia requires specifically labeled fertilizers made for the zoysia lawns. So, before applying any fertilizer on them, make sure to check the label first. The optimum application of fertilizer on them is 2-4 lbs. every year of slow-release nitrogen per 1000 square feet of lawn. Applying too much fertilizer can result in unhealthy and thatch lawn.
